This is a Suggestion in regards to Prince William County Police. I had an interesting and pleasant conversation with one of Prince William County's Police Officers at the Horner-Pentagon pickup this morning. The time was roughly 8:40AM and I pulled into the line to wait for the next riders available to pick up. There were 2 cars in front of me, also waiting to pick up riders. The police officer pulled up to the cars in front of me one at a time to speak with them from his vehicle. I was of course next. The officer was polite and asked that I not "park" in the space where we pick up riders and move elsewhere to wait for the next rider. His reason for moving us along was because there are No Parking signs where the pickup points are located. He stated the signs are clearly marked and we cannot be there even to pick up or wait for riders. I understand the sign and I of course told him I would comply; however, I asked him what his suggestion was for picking up slugs at this location. He was simply confused and had no understanding of the slugging concept. We pulled off to the side and I attempted to provide him some insight to the program and how it works, but the short story is this one police officer's lack of understanding of the process may cause some short-term (potentially long-term) confusion on the program. I also shared with him that the message that he is trying to convey needs to go to the larger masses rather than just the 3 cars who happened to be there at this moment. I suggested that he, or some of his fellow officers, come to the line earlier in the morning to observe the process and to provide direction on how they would like the spot to be handled, but I got the impression that this officer did not understand at all the slugline as he was asking a lot of questions of other locations in the area where he has witnessed people standing in line waiting for a ride. There are 3 suggestions that I can come up with: 1) Request a change to the signage so that it reads "No Parking, passenger pickup only" or some variation 2) Get a message out to the masses requesting careful attention to the "No Parking" signs as it appears that this one officer is concerned 3) Provide some education or briefing to PWCP to ensure they understand slugging and how it works and its intent. Interestingly, the police officer in this case was not concerned with safety in regards to the signage; he was actually more concerned with the perception that if a picture was taken while a car was parked there waiting for a rider and a police car was in the picture that the "Facebook Critics" would look at the police in a manner that they were harassing the people. Odd, but he made this or similar statement 4 or 5 times. The officer was nice, but certainly some additional outreach is required for local law enforcement.
